CLIENT SNAPSHOT: MEDIA RELATIONS FOR WEWARD
How’s this for a snappy media relations idea?
Do you know what part of your day contributes the most to your “Health Bank Account”? In other words, what daily activities top up your health account and what counts as a withdrawal? And how do you get your health account to balance?
That’s exactly the strategic direction we adopted for our healthtech client WeWard. Our consumer PR team set themselves the challenge of finding out just how far they would have to walk to offset the treats that we all love the most, balancing naughty by being nice and healthy.
We did a quick office poll. Unsurprisingly, as a lifestyle PR agency, most of us were curious about how far we would have to walk to earn a glass of wine or pint of beer. Strange that?!
The WeWard team then set to work, and between client and agency we calculated just how far and how many steps we would need to track on the WeWard app to enjoy a glass of our favourite British tipple guilt-free. We found that the calories in one pint of cider or one glass of red wine can take more than 5,000 steps to walk off.
We created a snappy pitch, put on our media relations hats and took our story to the British nationals. In a matter of a few hours, we had secured The Sun, The Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, MSN and This is Money. It was creative storytelling and media relations at its best. The story was then syndicated internationally, picking up a wave of further outlets from English speaking markets. Genius!
So, if you fancy a pint this evening, download the WeWard app and get those trainers on. You’ve got 5,385 steps before taking that first sip!
And if you’re wondering how to enjoy the best of both worlds? Well, a shot of Jack Daniel’s or a 125ml glass of champers is probably the best option. A 125ml flute of champagne contains 90 calories, taking just 2,520 steps to walk off, in around 19 minutes. Meanwhile, a shot of JD has 60 calories. This would take around 1,680 steps to walk off, in around 12 minutes.
